INTRODUCTION
In 1878 Skene coined the term interstitial cystitis (IC) for a syndrome of complex bladder symptoms that includes urinary frequency, urgency and bladder and pelvic pain. This syndrome mostly affects women, many of whom may for years remain undiagnosed and untreated. Decades after Skene’s observation and despite numerous clinical and laboratory investigations, this condition still remains an enigma.
