Laser Prostatectomy
An effective durable treatment for BPH is now available, which has much better results than in-office prostate heating therapies, and is safer and easier for the patient than the trans urethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P). Photo vaporization of the prostate (PVP) is done is an outpatient setting using the GreenLight KTP laser. This laser actually removes prostate tissue by vaporizing it, leaving a wide open channel for the urine to pass through. Results and relief are rapid. Recovery is usually quick and comfortable. The GreenLight PVP is done at a surgicenter. The thin laser fiber is used through a cystoscope within the urethra to precisely vaporize the proper amount of enlarged prostate tissue. Patients are normally released after an hour or two. About half will go home catheter-free and half will wear a catheter for a day or two. The PVP is usually very well tolerated. There may be some slight burning on urination for a couple of weeks and perhaps a little bit of blood in the urine. Occasionally, more severe symptoms need to be treated. The incidence of retrograde ejaculation, or "dry climax". has dropped from almost 100% with the TUR-P to only about 25%. Another 25% will have a reduced ejaculation, while half will maintain their normal ejaculation. The PVP Laser Procedure should not affect the ability to have an erection or orgasm, so men who are sexually active can look forward to remaining so. Patient satisfaction has been very high with this state-of-the-art prostate treatment.
