Urinary Incontinence
OVERACTIVE BLADDER (OAB) The two most common forms of Urinary Incontinence are the overactive bladder (OAB) and stress incontinence (SUI). The symptoms of OAB are consistent with urinary frequency, urgency (a strong and sudden need to pass urine) with or without inability to get to the toilet fast enough before leakage of urine occurs (urge incontinence). These symptoms are caused from involuntary bladder contractions (spasms) and they may or may not be associated with neurological diseases. The patients are initially evaluated in the office for their ability to empty the bladder (post void residual), for infections or blood and subsequently by cystoscopy and Urodynamics. The treatment modalities consist of Kegel exercises and biofeedback therapy and various medications. Since 2006 we also offer OAB patients the option of BOTOX injections into the bladder. This treatment may be attractive to patients with OAB who do not benefit or from OAB medications or cannot tolerate their side effects (see Botox section).
